Inboth generations and all its global iterations, Honda Fit features an interior packaging design which places the fuel tank under the front seat—enabling rear seats to fold flat and to provide a flexible and regularized cargo volume.

The nameplate Jazz is used in Europe,some parts of Asia,Australia,Oceania,the Middle East,and Africa — while the name "//Fit" is used inJapan,China,and the Americas.It is sold in approximately 115countries and produced at 10plants in 8countries / regions.As ofJuly 2010,worldwide cumulative sales were 3,5000,000.

Honda Fit debuted in June2001 inJapan and immediately became a big hit.By December2001,it had outsold the Toyota Corolla,and ranked 1st in sales for 9out of 12months in2002.It subsequently was introduced inEurope(early 2002),Australia(late 2002),South America(early 2003),South Africa and South-East Asia(2003),China (Sep2004),and Mexico(late 2005).

A production model for the UnitedStates andCanada debuted onJanuary 8,2006 at the NorthAmerican International Auto Show in Detroit. Honda Fit was released inCanada onApril 3,2006,and in the U.S. onApril 20,2006 as a 2007model year car.In the North American markets,the 1st generation Honda Fit was replaced after only two model years by a new 2009 model, which was released for Japan in November 2007 as a 2008 model.Subsequent iterations will maintain the same platforms worldwide.

Honda originally intended to name the car "//Fitta",but shortened the name in some markets,and renamed it completely in others,upon discovering that in severalNordic languages,fitta is a popular and very vulgar slang word for "//vagina".

The 1st generation Honda Fit was produced in 6countries,Suzuka (Japan),Sumaré (Brazil),Guangzhou (China),Ayutthaya (Thailand),Karawang (Indonesia) and thePhilippines.Models produced inJapan were for Honda//'s home market,Europe,some Asian markets, Australia(till the end of2005),Canada and the UnitedStates.Models for the Malaysian,Singaporean and Vietnamese markets are produced inThailand.The Brazilian factory suppliedMexico,all of LatinAmerica and the Caribbean.Chinese models were sold in mainland China,and products from a dedicated export plant were exported to some left-hand-drive European markets,while Honda Jazz models inHongKong were imported fromJapan.

Depending on the region, Honda Fit is available with a 1.2, 1.3(in Europe referred as 1.4L model), 1.5 liter i-DSI engine, or 1.5 liter VTEC engine. All four engines are based on Honda’s L-series engine family. The eight-valve i-DSI (intelligent dual and sequential) engines use two spark plugs per cylinder, allowing gasoline to burn more completely; therefore, fuel consumption and emissions are reduced while maximum torque at mid-range rpm is maintained. The 1.5L VTEC engine has the typical 16-valve configuration that can maximize output at high rpm.

Honda Fit//'s L-series of engines also provides the castings and reciprocating mass for Honda Marine//’s 75 and 90horsepower (67kW) outboard motors,the BF75 and theBF90.

TheEngines are mated to a5-speed manual,5-speed automatic,or continuously variable transmission (CVT),depending on the region(CVT not offered inUnited States).2forms of theCVT are offered:the regular,and the CVT-7.The CVT-7 offers a smooth,continuous flow of power,or 7simulated "//gears" controlled by paddle shifters on the steering column.

The Honda Fit uses Honda//'s Global Small Car platform,which is also used by Honda Fit Aria / Honda City (a sedan version of theFit),Honda Airwave(a station wagon version of the Fit Aria / Honda City),the Mobilio,and the MobilioSpike.
